In honor of the return of Jason Voorhees return in the short Sweet Revenge. I have decided to post a short review of Friday the 13th. I know you’re probably thinking why is the Madam writing a review about this film when it’s a classic. Is she getting senile? No. But I have found out not everyone knows the film. I know. I know that you’re saying to yourself that’s crazy! I have found a few horror fans, that are Generation Z are not aware of it. Or even the franchise. Sure they may know the name of Jason, but not the movie.
So here it goes, hopefully without spoilers, for those who don’t know the film.
Friday the 13th (1980)
Genre: B-Horror/Slasher Horror/Survival/Suspense/Mystery/Teen Horror/ Whodunnit/Horror/Mystery
Where to Watch: Freebie, Prime Video (from
$3.99)
In 1958, there is a campfire with a sing along. All is good, until 2 camp counselors quietly go off to have sex. They are murdered by someone unknown. The year prior a young boy, who had special needs drowned in the lake. Because the counselors who were supposed to be watching him were having sex.
We flash forward to the future. The date is Friday, June 15th. Counselors are getting the camp ready to be used. It’s been closed since the 1958 murders. The camp’s owner Steve Christy is helping them. Several things happen. A snake is found in one of the girls’ cabins. The teen girls Marcie, Alice and Brenda try to kill it by hitting it with pillows. But one of teen boys chop it in half with a machete. At the lake one of them pretends to drown. The town crazy (or is he) Ralph warns the counselors that they are doomed. A local police officer comes looking for Ralph and sees a camper named Ned dancing around dressed as an Indian dancing around. The cop tells them that there better not be any drug use up there at the camp. The cop is actually looking for Ralph, who has just cycled off repeatedly saying “Doomed”. Steve leaves the camp to get more supplies as a storm comes in. Murders begin at the camp by an unknown assailant, just like in 1958.
Who will be killed? Who will survive? Who is the murderer? Why are they killing people? If you haven’t seen the movie. You should it’s a classic. And all these questions will be answered and more.
Director Sean C. Cunningham and writers Victor Miller and Ron Kurtz (uncredited) bring innovative storytelling techniques to this film. Together, their collaboration not only defined a new era in horror films but also set the stage for numerous sequels and an enduring franchise.
Friday the 13th is not just a film designed to scare but a cultural touchstone that offers insight into the evolution of horror cinema. Its blend of suspense, psychological exploration, and iconic storytelling makes it a must watch for anyone interested in the genre.
