The movie begins with Julian Barrett (Eric Robert’s), a filmmaker of the Slasher franchise “Summer Camp “. Julian is ready to make a comeback. This time he’s going to host and produce the reality show “Camp Dread.” The group that will be the participants are at-risk youth. The teens being interviewed for the show, will compete against each other for a $1million prize. Which is a lot better than going to prison or an institution. In this group are a guy labeled a psychopath, the lesbian, the jokester and the sexually abused girl who murdered the assailant that assaulted her - her brother. As Rachel (Felissa Rose), past star of the “Summer Camp “ franchise and Julian’s assistant tells the teens that there will be a murderer after them. The teens become uneasy, until Rachel assures them that the killer will just tap them. Tapping them will put them out of the competition. Yeah right. If it was that easy, we wouldn’t have a movie, would we? Someone has a different idea than tapping. S/he wants blood. The suspicions grow that it’s someone connected to the camp or one of the participants. The tension escalates as the murders become more brutal and frequent, with the campers and staff falling victim one by one. The survivors realize that the killer is among them and that the murders are more personal than random. One of the interesting kills is a person, who has a prosthetic leg is beaten to death with it.
I wish I could say more about this movie, but it would ruin the twists and boy those twists are really something! You wouldn’t want me to ruin it for now, would you? Of course not! You will have to watch the film to see who the killer is and what those twists are.
Overall, “Camp Dread” is a slasher horror that plays with themes of redemption, past sins, and the dangers lurking with seemingly innocent settings.
B. Harrison Smith’s direction played a crucial role in establishing “Camp Dread” as a tense, visually engaging horror film with a mix of slasher action and an eerie horror atmosphere. His background and expertise in horror filmmaking helped craft a movie that balances gore, scares and the telling of this dark storytelling, making it a memorable entry.
The actors that stood out for me was Novak (Joe Rafa). Novak is the one who was labeled as a psychopath. This character is a loose cannon. And makes he’s character very real. Nicole Cinaglia as Adrienne, the girl who murdered her brother for continuous sexual assault. Adrienne is in a shell. She seems to have social anxiety. It was nice to see Eric Robert’s, Felissa Rose and Danielle Harris as the sheriff.
Camp Dread is a fun, suspenseful horror film that combines slasher tropes with a creepy camp setting and practical effects. It’s perfect for horror enthusiasts looking for a film who love horror films with a mix of suspense, mystery, and blood.
Trivia- “In a meta form of events, Felissa Rose plays Rachel Steele, the star of an 8’s slasher film called “Summer Camp” about a killer who terrorizes and kills off campers. This is similar to the plot of her character Angela in the cult film, “Sleepaway Camp.” IMDb
